Community Budget Advocates to Monitor Implementation 2016 State Budgets

A group of grassroots transparency and accountability activists from Kano, Abia, Bayelsa, Delta, Akwa Ibom and Nasarawa states have concluded plans to monitor the implementation of the 2016 budgets of their various states. The plan was fine-tuned during a one-day capacity building workshop for budgets activists drawn from the six states which held at Abuja on the 1st of December 2016.

In line with its objective of encouraging open and transparent budgets in states of the Niger Delta, Social Action’s Open Budget Cluster on the 15th of September 2016 carried out a Government-Citizens Consultative Meeting on Open Budgets. The event which held in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa state capital specifically aimed at making budgets and other fiscal document available and accessible to citizens. Participants at the event were drawn from communities, youth organizations and other civil society organizations, as well as a selection of government duty bearers including agencies responsible for proactive disclosure of fiscal information.

On the 9th of September 2016, Social Action organised a consultative meeting on open budgets. The forum which held at Aldgate Congress Hotel in Port Harcourt sought to bring together citizens and government officials to discuss ways of building trust and enhancing civic engagement in the budget process. It is part of a set of strategic interventions to deepen the participation of citizens in the budget process.

The event aimed at ensuring that state annual budgets are open and available to citizens. This accessibility of state budgets will kick-start other forms of citizens’ engagement which will lead to more participatory and prudent fiscal practices.
